ETCSL Cuneiform Sources

The objective here is to provide links to the CDLI catalogue sources for the literary works given by ETCSL. The notes also tie the etcsl catalogue numbers to the corresponding Q-catalogue numbers (used in CDLI as composite id's). In principle, the etcsl web-pages list the cuneiform sources for each of the literary works considered. However, in practice, there are sometimes difficulties in relating the sources listed by etcsl to those in the CDLI catalogue and so notes are included considering some of these difficulties. Peterson's study of sumerian literary fragments (BPOA 9) post-dates ETCSL and adds a lot of new information.

etcsl 1.1.1 = Q000332: Enki and Ninhursaga

etcsl 1.1.2 = Q000333: Enki and Ninmah

AO 7036 (TCL 16, 71) listed as AO 7936 by etcsl; CBS 13386 (OIP 15, 116) is listed as CBS 13368 by etcsl; CDLI photo shows that N 1889 is part of the CBS 2168+ tablet; Benito Enki p.20 also lists 3 bi-lingual versions K 2168, K 1711, K 4932; Benito Enki p.20 A should include CBS 11327 (and not 1137). CDLI adds CBS 2210.

etcsl 1.1.3 = Q000334: Enki and the world order

Etcsl lists N 5053 but this is a lexical tablet. Etcsl lists UM 29-16-413 whereas CDLI lists UM 29-16-229 + UM 29-16-251 + UM 29-16-413. Benito Enki p.83 S should presumably be 3N-T927,528 (and not 3N-T937,528); Benito Enki p.82 A should include CBS 6901 (and not 1609). CDLI includes numerous joins to N 3562. CDLI also includes N 7881.

etcsl 1.1.4 = Q000335: Enki's journey to Nippur

CBS 2155 is listed in CDLI as CBS 2155 + CBS 12690 + N 3204, i.e. including N 3204, which is listed separately by etcsl. In CDLI there is a join of CBS 10326 to CBS 10314 + CBS 13949 not noted in etcsl. In CDLI CBS 2167 is joined to N 3158. CBS 15149 + CBS 15149A is presumably the tablet listed in CDLI as CBS 15144. In the CDLI photo, N 1512A and N 6426 are joined to N 1347. In the CDLI photo, CBS 7158 is joined to N 4183. In the CDLI photo, CBS 4916 and UM 29-16-184 are joined. The Copenhagen tablet, KNMA 10058, is listed in CDLI as CNMA 10058. Si 512 is listed in CDLI as Ist Si 0512; UET 6 *156 = UET 6/3, 416; UET 6 *66 = UET 6/3, 415; W-B 161 is listed in CDLI as Ashm 1922-0161; the tablet listed in etcsl as YBC 2514 is listed in CDLI as NBC 2514; the CDLI listing also includes joins to UM 29-13-207. In addition, CDLI includes N 6994+, N 3171, N 6974, N 3576, 3N-T902,93 (following Peterson), and also IM 77379 + IM 73384 (Larsa).

etcsl 1.2.1 = Q000336: Enlil and Ninlil

CBS 8315 is listed as CBS 8215 by etcsl, and now has the additional join of N 1202. Etcsl omits the join of IM 58439+ to UM 29-13-532 for etcsl 1.2.1 (although it is included for etcsl 4.14.1 Nanshe Hymn). Etcsl omits the join N 3038 + N 3124. Peterson adds N 3124, N 3455 & N 6126.

etcsl 1.2.2 = Q000337: Enlil and Sud

CBS 3956 (OIP 16, 112) is listed as CBS 3958 by etcsl; UM 29-15-60 is listed as UM 29-15-255B by etcsl and Civil; CDLI listing includes later examples from Nineveh, Nippur and Sultantepe.

etcsl 1.3.1 = Q000338: Inanna and Enki

It is clear from the photo that N 3276 is part of CBS 13571 (and not CBS 15283 as suggested by etcsl). CBS 13571+ includes not only N 3276 but also N 4838 in addition to the fragments listed by etcsl. Peterson adds N 5730; he also argues against CBS 15283 being part of the same tablet as Ist Ni 4151.

etcsl 1.3.2 = Q000339: Inanna and Ebih

There are numerous comments to make here. Inanna and Ebih appears on CBS 7206 (not 7207 as listed by etcsl). CBS 6840 is joined to CBS 8329 along with other fragments (as can be seen in the photo), so that the tablets is now CBS 6840 + CBS 8329 + N 3001 + N 7417. The text listed as CBS 15146 by etcsl is now CBS 13977 + CBS 15146 + N 4165 (+) N 5131 (+) N 7233. The texts listed as N 1328 + N 6149, N 1333 & Ist Ni 3052 + Ist Ni 9722 by etcsl are now listed by CDLI as N 1328 + N 1333 + N 6128 + N 6149 + N 6433 + N 7265 + Ist Ni 3052 + Ist Ni 9722. The text listed as N 1362 by etcsl is now listed as N 1362 + N 1412, however, it appears to be a small fragment that is associated with Lugalbanda in the Mountain Cave in etcsl 1.8.2.1 (Lugalbanda epic I in cdli). The text listed as N 4199 by etcsl is now listed as N 4142 + N 4199 + N 5783 in CDLI. CDLI includes N 1357 and N 3262 for Inanna and Ebih, which were both excluded by etcsl. The fragments Ist Ni 2711, Ist Ni 9725 are listed separately by etcsl but joined by CDLI (following Vantisphout NABU 1987,87). CDLI also includes Ist Ni 9740 and 9753. The text listed as UM 29-16-032 by etcsl is now listed as N 3277 + N 3345 + N 7359 + N 7896 + UM 29-16-032 (+) N 3257 in CDLI (based on photo); N 3345 is also associated with etcsl 2.2.5 Lament for Uruk. CDLI lists 3N-T907,283 joined to 3N-T916,356. Etcsl omits the tablet listed on CDLI P387610. Etcsl lists 82-7-14,2463, which is the registration number of BM 058054 (now joined to BM 082928). CDLI includes here numerous additional tablets and joins listed by Attinger (ZA 88 (1998) 164-195), Jaques (ZA 94 (2004) 202-225), Delnero (Fs Eichler, 2011, 123-149), Peterson (BPOA 09) and Attinger on-line 1.3.2.

etcsl 1.3.3 = Q000340: Inanna and Shukalletuda

CDLI has CBS 10317, & N 3537 as quasi-joins to CBS 10305+ rather than listing them as separate texts as in etcsl. For the entries for UET 6/3, etcsl lists Shaffer's provisional numbers, in CDLI these are listed as UET 6/3, 417, 418 & 419. Volk (1995) & etcsl join Ist Ni 9541 + 9608 (En), and have Ist Ni 9721 + 9564 + 9748 (Dn) as a separate entry; whereas the CDLI entries join Ist Ni 9608 + 9748 and have Ist Ni 9721 & 9564 as separate entries; either there is some confusion or these are all part of same tablet. Attinger (on-line 1.3.3) adds MS 4508.

etcsl 1.3.4 = Q000341: Inanna and Gudam

etcsl 1.3.5 = Q000342: Inanna and An

etcsl 1.4.1 = Q000343: Inanna's descent to the nether world

UET 6/1, 10 is now joined to UET 6/3, 433. In UET 6/3, Shaffer lists 420-436 under this title (i.e. not just *320=425, *269=426, *306=431). CBS 2198 and CBS 9800 are clearly joined (see photo) and CDLI suggests that Ist Ni 368 is part of this tablet. Based on the CDLI photo, CBS 12638 + CBS 12684 + CBS 12685 + CBS 12686 + CBS 12702 + CBS 12752. CDLI also includes BM 29628 (CT 15, pl. 19), BM 109167, CBS 6894, N 2966 fall under this title. Shaffer lists UET 6/3, 437 under this title. In the CDLI photo, N 0953 is joined to CBS 15162. Peterson adds unnumbered fragments to CBS 13908 and to CBS 15162+, joins N 7710 to N 983, and adds N 7206 + N 7210 to this list.

etcsl 1.4.1.1 = Q000344: Dumuzi and Geshtinana

For the UET 6/3 text, etcsl uses Shaffer's provisional numbering, whereas in CDLI this is listed as UET 6/3, 437. Shaffer lists this as etcsl 1.4.1 Inanna's descent into the Netherworld.

etcsl 1.4.1.3 = Q000345: Dumuzi and his sisters

etcsl 1.4.3 = Q000347: Dumuzi's dream

The etcsl list omits texts that are included in some of the sources quoted: AO 24146 (Durand 1990), 3N-T0903,121 & 3N-T0918,406 (Alster 1982), 3N-T0919,481 (Alster 1972). MS 3305, MS 3322, CMAA 022 C0001L, CMAA 022 C0002L, VAT 21608 are noted by Alster (ZA 96, 1ff.). Etcsl lists Ur tablets using provisional numbers (UET 6/3, *60 = UET 6/3, 466; UET 6/3 *114 + *155 + *243 = UET 6/3, 464 + 465; UET 6/3, *118 = UET 6/3, 467). There are a number of additional texts listed in CDLI which are not supported within Alster's lists some of which may be open to question: Ist Ni 04152a, N 3621, N 6497, UM 29-15-359. Alster's drawing of N 6467 does not match the fragment which is now part of BPOA 9, 144 (Shulgi F); it seems likely that the fragment attached to N 3295 is not numbered N 6467. Peterson adds N 1371, N 3621, N 4498, N 5322, N 7657, CBS 15355; he also joins N 5270 to CBS 13380A+. Attinger (on-line 1.4.3) adds Ist Ni 9643.

etcsl 1.4.4 = Q000348: Inanna and Bilulu

etcsl 1.5.1 = Q000349: Nanna-Suen's journey to Nippur

In CDLI, CBS 2214 is joined to CBS 2284. In etcsl UM29-15-629 is joined to CBS 14026 and also to HS 1481+; in CDLI UM 29-15-629 is joined to CBS 14026 (join shown in photo). In etcsl, HS 1481 is joined to N 1334+; this join has not been noted in CDLI. The tablet listed in etcsl as Edin 09-405,1 (BL I) is listed as NMS A.1909.405.01 (P414091) in CDLI. The tablet listed as JRL E 1 (AfO 24 pl.1) in etcsl is listed as JRL 1060 (P430871) in CDLI. In CDLI, N 3575 is joined to N 3725+ (see photo), whereas in etcsl these are listed separately. Etcsl lists CBS 14185 and Ist Ni 4282 as both 1.5.1 (Nanna-Suen's return to Nippur) and 1.6.1 (Ninurta's return to Nippur). The etcsl list includes UM 29-16-067; this is included in NATN p.48 as an uncopied fragment and in CDLI as a legal document, possibly a rental contract; thus it is likely to be an error for UM 29-15-067. CDLI includes Ist Ni 9462 and UM 29-13-225 under this heading based on etcsl sources, but etcsl excludes these texts. CDLI includes a quasi-join between CBS 10390+ and CBS 10396 (based on photo). Peterson joins N 3014 to CBS 2244+

etcsl 1.6.1 = Q000350: Ninurta's return to Nippur

Etcsl lists CBS 8013 and CBS 8034 separately but Cooper (1978, 53) states that they are almost certainly part of the same tablet. Etcsl lists N 4359 but the CDLI entry suggests that it is a Neo-Babylonian business document. Etcsl lists CBS 14185 and Ist Ni 4282 as both 1.5.1 (Nanna-Suen's return to Nippur) and 1.6.1 (Ninurta's return to Nippur). Etcsl lists N 3309 as both 1.6.1 (Ninurta's return to Nippur) and 1.6.2 Ninurta's exploits). Etcsl lists UET 6 *70, which is UET 6/3, 478; however, Shaffer suggest that this tablet should be 1.6.2 Ninurta's exploits. Van Dijk lists Ni 13166 as 1.6.2 but etcsl and ISET2 and lists it as 1.6.1. Etcsl lists 3N-T916,437 but this should almost certainly be 3N-T916,347. Similarly, the etcsl 3N-T916,412 seems incorrect but I could not find a corrected reference. The CDLI photo of N 1746 shows joins but the numbers on the tablets are difficult to read with confidence. Peterson adds CBS 13402D & UM 29-15-534A and joins several fragments to N 1746. In addition, CDLI lists numerous examples of later versions of Ninurta's return to Nippur.

etcsl 1.6.2 = Q000351: Ninurta's exploits

In this case, the number of tablets concerned is relatively large and the etcsl list is just a subset of the full list given by van Dijk (and CDLI). Consequently the differences are too numerous to consider in detail.

etcsl 1.6.3 = Q000352: Ninurta and the Turtle

Etcsl double accounts CBS 8319, CBS 15007 and CBS 15085, i.e. they are listed both as individual fragments and as quasi-joined fragments. UET 6/3 *20 = UET 6/3, 480. However, UET 6/3 *484 = UET 6/3, 655 is identified by Shaffer as "Riddles?".

etcsl 1.7.1 = Q000354: Marriage of Martu

etcsl 1.7.3 = Q000356: Ningishzida's journey to the nether world

etcsl 1.7.4 = Q000357: The Flood story

etcsl 1.7.6 = Q000358: How grain came to Sumer

etcsl 1.7.7 = Q000359: The shumunda grass

etcsl 1.7.8 = Q000360: Pabilsag's journey to Nippur

etcsl 1.8.1.01 = Q000361: Gilgamesh and Aga

CDLI has an entry for CBS 15164 + Ist Ni 4396 + Ist Ni 4448, whereas etcsl lists these fragments separately. In addition, numerous joins have been proposed by Vanstiphout (NABU 1989, 99) but to date these have not been adopted by either etcsl or CDLI.

etcsl 1.8.1.02 = Q000362: Gilgamesh and the bull of heaven

etcsl 1.8.1.03 = Q000363: Death of Gilgamesh

In CDLI, CBS 6966+ includes the fragments, CBS 14109B & N 1377.

etcsl 1.8.1.04 = Q000364: Gilgamesh, Enkidu and the Netherworld

There is some confusion over the fragments N 1752 and N 1772. Etcsl 1.8.1.04 suggests that they are both joined to N 1452. It is clear from the photo that N 1452 joins N 1772, however, it does not show other number(s). Etcsl 1.8.2.4 and Berlin Enmerkar (p. 34) suggests N 1772 is joined instead to CBS 6985, but the problem arises here because some parts of that tablet are not clearly numbered. The CDLI entry implies that Berlin's N 1772 should be replaced by N 1752, although the basis for this is not clear. On other issues: CDLI has N 4209 + N 4230 (based on photo); in etcsl the ref. for Ist Ni 2378 should be BE 31, 35; the CDLI catalogue for the Ur 6/3 texts is based on UET 6/3, p.13; In the CDLI photo, CBS 13116 + CBS 15360. CDLI includes two Haddad tablets. Peterson adds N 1375, N 2174, N 6731, N 6958, UM 29-13-998; CBS 6480, N 7176 & N 6022 are joined to CBS 15150+. Attinger (on-line) adds CBS 10459, N 4507, 3N-T916,352, MS 2887, MS 3361, W 17259,ad. Cavigneaux & Al-Rawi (Iraq 62, 1 n.3) joins Ist Ni 4585 and Ist Ni 9626.

etcsl 1.8.1.05 = Q000365: Gilgamesh and Huwawa (version A)

There are numerous comments to make here. KNMA 10052 is a Copenhagen tablet and is labelled as CNMA in CDLI. N 1013 + Ni 9950 includes additional fragment N 3444 in CDLI. Etcsl double accounts Ni 9950. There is now a quasi-join between N 1408 + UM 29-13-473 and N 1380; and between N 1870+ and N 2422; and a join between N 3137 and CBS 13121. N 3691 + N 3776 are listed in CDLI as being part of the same tablet as Ni 4475 and Ni 9746. CDLI lists a join between Ni 4289, Ni 9681 & Ni 9747 (following Edzard ZA 81, 165). The CDLI photo shows that N 3659 is joined to N 5696. Etcsl gives provisional refs. for UET 6/3 fragments and these are most readily understood by referring to Shaffer's UET 6/3, p.13. Etcsl's ref. to W 17529n is a typo for W 17259n = VAT 21592; 3N-T902,127 should be 3N-T903,127; and 3N-T907,336 should presumably be 3N-T917,366. Kish 1932-155 is Ashm 1932-0155 in CDLI. Etcsl lists N 6485 which, from the photo, does not appear to be a literary text. Etcsl lists N 1577, but this is a small piece which is now joined to N 1542 (etcsl 4.13.a, Hymn to Nanna. The CDLI listing also includes examples quoted by Edzard (ZA 80, 165ff.) but excluded by Etcsl. Edzard's NiWW 3N-T306,226 should be 3N-T906,266. Peterson adds N 3652 & CBS 14109X; and N 4211 is joined to N 4192.

etcsl 1.8.1.05.1 = Q000366: Gilgamesh and Huwawa (version B)

The tablet cited by etcsl (& Civil) as MM 503, should be MM 1503. The tablet with excavation no. W 17259,n is VAT 21592. CDLI also includes CBS 11891 + UM 29-13-820 under this heading.

etcsl 1.8.2.1 = Q000367: Lugalbanda in the mountain cave

In CDLI list: CBS 14138 joined to CBS 15361; N 3378 joined to UM29-16-433; N 3732 joined to N 6767. Vanstiphout (OLP 26, 009) also includes Ist Ni 4286. Vanstiphout (OLP 26, 009) includes OECT 1, pl. 19 (Stevenson tablet) which is excluded by Etcsl; however, Etcsl includes OECT 1, pl.9 which is excluded by Vanstiphout and this could potentially be a typographical error. Peterson adds CBS 7803, CBS 10388, N 1406, N 6760, N 7428, 3N-T0904,167; and joins N 7164 to N 7227.

etcsl 1.8.2.2 = Q000368: Lugalbanda and the Anzud bird

In CDLI: CBS 7977 listed as part of the same tablet as CBS 7979, UM 29-16-441 and UM 29-16-449; UM 29-16-414 is listed as joined to N 3252 & UM 29-13-209 (Gilgamesh & Huwawa). Etcsl lists N 1412 as representing both Lugalbanda epics which seems unlikely for such a small fragment. Peterson adds N 1632, N 6933, N 6935; and joins CBS 10406 to UM 29-13-198 and N 6853 to CBS 7298+.

etcsl 1.8.2.3 = Q000369: Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta

In CDLI: CBS is listed as part of the same tablet as Ist Ni 4529; N 7436 is part of CBS 13644+. CDLI also lists N 3205, N 4120 + N 7261 & N 4130. Peterson adds UM 29-16-74; and joins N 7457 to Ist Ni 9601A+.

etcsl 1.8.2.4 = Q000370: Enmerkar and En-suhgir-ana

On other issues: CDLI lists quasi-joins between N 3494, UM 29-16-424 & UM 29-16-450; N 3664+ is joined to N 4334; following Vanstiphout, Ist Ni 4126 is joined to N 1454+. CDLI also lists Ist Ni 4400 and 4582. Peterson adds N 3610; and joins N 2505 to N 3205 and N 1367 + N 6609 to N 6595.
