CDLI page

Description: Gilgamesh P represents the second tablet in the Old Babylonian version of the Gilgamesh story, known by its incipit (from the still missing first tablet) as 'Surpassing All Others'. Another tablet that appears to be from the same series has also been discovered. The Old Babylonian Gilgamesh represents the first version of the story in Akkadian, and might reflect an earlier oral tradition (George 2003: 22-24). Although it draws on the various Sumerian tales of 'Bilgamesh', it appears to be the first attempt to present Gilgamesh's exploits as a single sequence.
