The Faithful Lover

Introduction

The text entitled The Faithful Lover was first published by Wolfram von Soden in 1950 as “Ein Zwiegespräch Hammurabis mit einer Frau,” (von Soden 1950). In 1961 it was then re-edited and published in English translation by Moshe Held in a paper entitled “A Faithful Lover in an Old Babylonian Dialogue,” (Held 1961) from which Foster drew the title used here.

Von Soden had originally thought that it represented a dialogue between Hammurabi, the famous king of the First Dynasty of Babylon, and “a young woman whom he seeks to influence to marry his son” (Held 1961, 1), but as Held notes, “[i]t has nothing to do with Hammurabi . . . the great king is mentioned in an oath formula invoking Nanâ, patroness of love, together with the king” (Held 1961, 2).
